Aboriginal Iwaidja Book KARLDURI ALARDALGARRAMA WURKA WALMUDJA Miriam McDonald

By Miriam McDonald

Softcover, Wraps

Description

This is a very rare and significant educational resource: an edition of the children's book "Sounds of the Bush," translated into the Iwaidja language (Northern Territory, Australia). Title (Iwaidja): KARLDURI ALARDALGARRAMA WURKA WALMUDJA (Translated as 'Sounds of the Bush' Original Author/Adaptation (Attributed to): Miriam McDonald Condition: Spine is bound with cloth tape. This book has seen some use over the years. Wear, loss, light staining and rubbing to the front cover. All 43 pages are clean and white, surprisingly with no drawings on them. This was likely a teacher's copy with larger writing to present to a classroom. Very minor tear ~2mm at the top of the last page. Unique Features: This copy has the Iwaidja title overpasted on the cover, a common practice for limited-run, localised language preservation project editions. This differs from the 1998 reprints where the inner red border is unbroken. This version is original and allows a space for this insert of the title, a very manual process! Significance: This book is a valuable example of Australian Indigenous language revitalisation and bilingual education materials, produced for specific remote communities. It is a highly sought-after item for libraries, universities, and cultural institutions focused on linguistics, Indigenous studies, and Australian education history. Jackie Pascoe and Ben Pascoe are listed as illustrators, alongside Marsha Ashwell, in the English/Burarra version of the book (titled Rirrakay Diltjiwuy ). They created the visual content for the story, while Miriam McDonald developed the text and adaptation for the educational resource. The book, thought to be originally titled Rirrakay Diltjiwuy, was produced as an educational resource to support bilingual programs in the Northern Territory and has been translated into several local Aboriginal languages. Known translations/versions of the book include: Burarra (Rirrakay Diltjiwuy) - This appears to be the original or primary v
