Description
Walker was born in Heidelberg, Melbourne, a nephew of the popular novelist 'Rolf Boldrewood' who disapproved of Walker's literary writings. He worked on stations and as a miner, travelling to New Zealand and then to South Africa, finally settling in Devon, England. Walker wrote under the pseudonym 'Coo-ee', publishing an early collection of stories, When the Mopoke Calls, with the English publisher John Long in 1898. He wrote seven novels, a number of which had Australian settings and themes. This is a scarcely found book and a great edition to any Australian literature collection
Synopsis
Title: At Possum Creek
Author/Publisher: William Sylvester Walker (Coo-Ee) (Bennett)
Publication Year: 1915
Format: First Edition Hardcover
Published in 1915, 'At Possum Creek' is a noteworthy work of fiction by William Sylvester Walker, better known by his distinctive pseudonym 'Coo-Ee'. This original first edition offers readers a glimpse into Australian literary output from the early 20th century, cementing its place as a significant piece of antiquarian literature.
Walker's life was as adventurous as one might expect from an Australian author of his era. Born in Heidelberg, Melbourne, and a nephew to the acclaimed novelist 'Rolf Boldrewood', Walker experienced life on stations and as a miner, travelling extensively before eventually settling in England. His writing, including this volume, draws upon these rich experiences, presenting narratives that are deeply rooted in the colonial Australian landscape and character.
As a work of adult fiction, 'At Possum Creek' invites readers to explore the stories and perspectives crafted by an author intimately familiar with the Australian bush and its unique spirit. The pseudonym 'Coo-Ee' itself evokes the distinctive call heard across the Australian landscape, subtly hinting at the themes and settings within his literary creations.
- Australian Bush Narratives: Through 'At Possum Creek', Walker transports his audience to the heart of the Australian countryside, weaving tales likely reflecting the everyday lives, challenges, and distinctive characters found within these remote settings.
- Insights into Colonial Life: Drawing upon his personal experiences working on stations and in mines, Walker's fiction often provides valuable, albeit fictionalised, insights into the societal norms and pioneering spirit prevalent in Australia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This original first edition of 'At Possum Creek' holds considerable appeal for collectors of Australian literature and those interested in the works of authors who chronicled the nation's early identity. As a genuine antiquarian piece by an author with a fascinating personal history and familial links to prominent Australian letters, it represents a unique find for discerning bibliophiles.
