The legends were first printed in 1837 as a regular series in magazine 'Bentley's Miscellany', and due to their popularity were compiled and published in book form. Although based on real legends and mythology, they are deliberately humorous parodies of medieval folklore and poetry.This is the first edition to feature full colour illustrations from Harry George Theaker, a successful illustrator, particularly of children's books. This is one of the first books he illustrated. Due to its popularity, Theaker was commissioned to work on countless others.Featuring a two page publisher's catalogue to the rear.
